Of textures and milkshape notes of experience...

The 2 points below are just notes of experience:

Textures (TGAs) only work for me if they're 16bit and uncompressed.I've had no luck using 8bit or 32bit textures.

If you load up a model in Milkshape, and in the Message box, it has lines saying something about error on line # in mscpp.dll, chances are when you go to export the model to cmp, it can be corrupted. I believe it's mainly a poly-count error, as MShape is a low-poly modeller.

Both of these issues have led to FL crashing, etc...

I thought it was 24bit, but maybe I was wrong.

Well technically you're both right

TGA files need to be a 16-bit image with an 8-bit alpha channel (or at least allow for the alpha channel) some programs will call it a 16-bit if it doesn't have an alpha channel others will call it 24-bit whether it has the alpha channel or not. So, either 16-bit or 24-bit is fine they'll both work in the game. Of course you shouldn't be using TGA's anyway, you should be using DDS files but that's a whole different issue

I agree with Victor,

The other advantage with dds is they are "true" you can set your model up with tgas in milkshape, then convert them to dds format and the game reads them as is - No need to flip and manipulate your tga's to get them to show correctly. also dds files make for smaller file sizes plus your level of detail (lod) is better with dds than tga, at least I have found them so with my limited experience.
