I partially used GMax to make this, but to be honest, GMax isn't that great. I learnt how to use it, then when a friend of mine at Uni received a copy of 3DSMax for his course, it went from there. Needless to say, 3DSMax is great, and you can export in .3ds straight off.
Now that I think about it though, I could've easily used GMax. The polycount is quite low (on purpose) and the only tools I used were extrude, bevel and the geometry creation menu. Oh and, the ever-critical human eye, of course!
I'm not sure when it'll be ready, since i'm re-arranging (formatting) my hard drives after 4 years of continuous fragmented mashing. I'll get right to texturing it after i've re-installed the critical stuff.
