The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

Project Privateer

This message is to test the waters for one of two new mods for Freelancer. Project Privateer is intended to create a remake of Orgin's Wing Commander: Privateer using the freelancer engine. This project is being directed under the auspices of Darkside Industries. Darkside Industries is a new company formed by various software techs from a variety of companies. In an effort to gain both fundiing ans industry recognition DSI has secured permission to create a number of OFFICIAL expansions and MODs for freelancer. What this means to you editors out there is that if there is enough interest and involvement the Microsoft will PURCHASE the MOD to use as an official release with all of your names attached. Please post with ideas for the project or your willingness to help

very nice sounding......but would there be an SP addon? or just MP? or both?

Post Fri Aug 22, 2003 11:19 pm

We are now looking for people to create a couple of ship models as a teaser...anybody interested post it here

Now to answer a couple of questions, yes there will be new commodities as well as old ones from the origional privateer, and yes this is mainly a SP mod HOWEVER it will be able to be run as a MP MOD if someone creates a server for it

The thing from Privateer i wanted to see done on Freelancer is the abillity to transport cargo to places for a faction.

At least it would make the game more interesting.

In some ways the old WC Privateer Game is somewhat more complete than Freelancer

Yeah, I get that a lot :p Don't feel bad - most projects take longer than anticipated. I'm in for the long haul <G>

I'd also appreciate if you'd notify Lancers Reactor about my mod (at http://blacklance.org/TC/Reckoning0.zip ) because for some reason they aren't responding to my emails

What's New Pussycat:
* More than 20 new ships: Broadsword, Caernaven, Centurion, Concordia, Demon, Dralthi, Exeter, Ferret, Free Trader, Gladius, Gothri, Hellcat, Hornet, Jalthi, Paradigm, Rapier, Raptor, Sabre, Scimitar, Stilleto, Talon, Thunderbolt, and Vindicator.
* Faction and system names changed to reflect Wing Commander.
* All weapons from Privateer, and a few other favorites.
* Variable power and armor levels.
* Guns, afterburners and shields now draw power.
* Missiles now take up space in the hull. Tradeoffs will have to be made bwtween ammo and cargo.
* Difficulty level retooled, for what should be a smoother curve.
* Mission payment redone - climbs steeper, caps at 44,000.
* Weapon stats - all guns are faster and have shorter ranges.
* Speed for all fighters and cargo ships multipled by 3.75.
* Missile ammo now takes up space in the cargo hold.
* Certain ships are capable of carrying only certain weapons, shields and power - see the readordie file for more info.
* Cruise speed doubled to 600.

Installation:
Installation should be fairly straightforward - you can extract it to your root directory, then move the Freelancer folder into C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games (or whatever the folder above your FL directory is). The mod is designed to work with FL Mod Manager, which, if you don't have it, is available at http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/downloa ... asp?id=143 (download OpenSP as well, if it doesn't already come with it.. Once you've installed it, drag the Freelancer Mod Manager folder to C:\Program Files.

I like this a remake of Privateer anyways what id like to see add to this mod is the ability to remove the ship cockpit from 1st person view if desired.

i would also like to see all the equipment from the Rightous Fire add-on added in as well. i want to be able to buy this stuff. i want the ability to upgrade all parts of the ship like the armor and the main engine speed. I find it extremely fun just upgrading every aspect of your ship.

If possible, I would like to have a radar on screen just like the one in privateer. I miss not having one while playing freelancer.

Xerx post:

More stuff like Privateer, tractors must buy, differnet grades, turret mounts, computer imaging optronics, different grades of engines. armor hulls, radars and ECM packages, etc.

Get rid of shield and hull batteries, cheese. Use differnt levels of repair robots and take the shields regeneration based on quality and engine power, LIKE the ORIGINAL Privateer.

And also like to see my inside of ship like the original Privateer, not this 'Flying Spread Sheet Interface'. I want to see my ship get a bashing.

And a plot that allows you to play through as any way you want. Good, Bad, or just plain Ugly.

i also agree with everything this guy says in his post, i like to see added to this mod.

I have no clue as to how editable inflight chatter may or may not be in Freelancer. But I have extracted 200+ mus_###.voc files from Privateer. I think the voc files are mainly voice chatter, but I don't have anything that can play voc files so I really don't know. If you have a voc2wav converter you can listen and hopefully add them all into Freelancer.

Because what made Privateer great was not just the gameplay, it was listening to the rantings of Retros, Pirates, Militia, Kilrathi and Confed.

On another matter, you say you're doing this for the possibility of getting Microsoft to pick this up as an official expansion. However, I don't believe they could legally because Privateer was not solely owned by Chris Roberts nor his company Digital Anvil when they sold to MS. In fact there may be no right or ownership to the game whatsoever, so MS could never officially implement a Privateer mod onto Freelancer.

Not to mention the fact, the project doesn't fit in step with what an Expansion really is. It's an Alteration not an Expansion. I think MS would only consider an Expansion.

Spectre

BTW, my concerns don't mean this isn't a valuable project, but I don't think we should kid ourselves about the appropriateness of the project according to Microsoft's position with relation to rights and ownership.

well spectre, you are both right and wrong...you see the rights to privateer were not owned by chris roberts like you said, but they were and still are owned by Origin Systems Inc., which was later bought out by EA who currently holds the rights to it, and who is willing to allow an expansion/alteration using TM'kd stuff from privateer provided Microsoft kicks them some $$$, and as for microsofts willingness, DSI has already contacted them and worked out a deal. Thats what this is all about - to see if there is much interest...and if there is then they'll go for it.
That being said, We still need help on this huge project...
