i need some modmaking help

as some of you may know, i am stuck on mission 6 (the hovis race). The only way i know of to cheat past the race is stated in davidiusbrown's topic (search for it, its in this forum), its a small mod that changes hovis's racing ship into a rheinland cruiser too big to fit through the race rings.

I have completed the first two steps of applying the mod without difficulty. the 2 steps are below:

1. Download bini (in the utilities list)

2. Copy bini to this directory
c:\program files\microsoft games\freelancer\data\missions\m06

I did those two.
I did not understand the third step:

3. Run bini.exe on the npcships.ini files in each directory to uncompress it into npcships.ini.txt

Can someone please explain the third step above so that a complete n00b to modding would understand?
And i dont want to hear any sh*t like "cheating is bad youd feel better if you beat it normally" or "just hug the inside of the rings and practice" or anything like that. All i want is a good answer to my question above.

Cheers,

emu

What ship were you flying - just engage cruise engines, steer through hoops and you can't fail to lose!!

Drag npcships.ini to the bini.exe icon and it should take care of it.

oh!

thank u imagine. THANK YOU! It was that simple.

edit: well, i dragged and dropped the only file in the m06 folder called "npcships" into bini but bini said: "error: this doesn't seem to be a Freelancer INI compressed file (2)"
Help?!

weird; it works for mine. Are you sure you're not dragging an already decompressed file? Also, if you are working in windows and do not see a new file appear, refresh your folder's contents.

how do you know if a file is decompressed or not?

well when i first saw the npcships file i opened it just for fun but i saw that i could already edit the words inside it. so i changed hovis ship (bw_fighter to rh_cruiser) without using bini at all and saved it. when i tried the race hovis didn't even show up. i changed it back to bw_fighter but when i tried it again he still didn't appear after i left the battleship hood.

How can i fix this? I flew to the track without doing the mission to practice and i discovered i can easily complete the race by using mouse flight. Im sure i could beat hovis now without cheating but i dont even know how to get him back his old ship. Do I have to reinstall the game or is there anyway to get him back his old ship (or even better, a cruiser)

<wince> you didn't backup? Maybe you can find the original file on your cd.

all aint lost - when you go to open the files with biniq -do you still see the text version there?? if so - you can do what i do (you don't have anything to lose here) and this does work. Follow the steps
1. Delete the offending ini file
2. Open the txt version of that ini with biniq
3. Save as and type in the name of the original ini file.....
4. Enjoy as you now have your unmodded ini file back........

By the way - this will only work if:
1. You modded the files once and never erased the txt version
2. You never erased the txt version after modding the file the first time...(not sure - never bloody checked) ie if you modded it again after the first erasing - you then get modded txt....i think - it made no sense as i read it back really..lol
Why it won't work:
1) You erased the txt after the first time you modded the file and then opened the ini again (makes a now txt version of the modded ini file)
2) Cos Sods law states that thou shalt install game again......
Other sorting out of probs........
1) leave your email addy below and which file it is that you require
2) I or someone else emails the respective file to you (clean) and off you go!
Hope this helps out - trust me - if you have the biniQ thing then you can convert your txt to ini dead easy and therefore providing you with your 'backup'

I use BiniQDU - which you can open up and then select directories and files to edit - it also shows the txt files as well - i don't know about others though - so if you use another version - i have no idea - sorry
BiniQDU should be in the downloads section - it is a great little program...
very easy to use!
