changing factions'' allies:

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

changing factions'' allies:

You know how a hostile faction opens fire on you immediately, but neutral ones don't--until their allies start attacking you? I was looking in the empathy.ini file to see how each faction feels about the rest, and I barely seen anyone who even felt +/- 0.5 one way or the other. What triggers a neutral faction to go hostile on you when their buddies are near?

example: I get neutral with lane hackers and head to mactan base, but outcasts are patrolling that area and ARE hostile to me. soon enough, lane hackers turn hostile too and I'm running with my contrail between my engine exhaust.

What I'd like to know is what empathy rating is needed to turn two factions into allies of each other (range of -1.0 - 1.0), or if there's another file I need to modify, other than empathy.ini . Any useful info on this will be welcome.

empathy.ini shows how much each action the player performs affects the reputations with the factions. Using this file you can see that if you kill bounty hunters, for example, it upsets the zoners (positive empathy) and makes most criminals happy (negative empathy).

To set up which factions hate each other you need to go into initialworld.ini, these are the actual reputation between the factions and are not effected by the players in any way.

To control how the factions feel towards the players you can edit mpnewcharacter.ini (for MP games) and I can't remember how to do it for SP games other than editing mi13.ini when using the OpenSP mod. There are some tutorials about this in the tutorial forum.

thanks a bunch. could you point me to a link that displays the empathy ranges for hostsile, neutral, friendly, and everything in between? I'm pretty certain around -0.6 factions will turn hostile.

Hmm, that I can't remember exactly outside the obvious where "0" is pure neutral, -0.91 is the normal minimum and 0.91 is the normal maximum for what the player can achieve in the game. I want to say it's close to where you already pointed out, right around the -0.60 +0.60 area.
