Nomad ''Shimmer'' Effects

Has anyone figured out how the shimmering effect works on the nomad ships? I'm creating a new ship that needs the shimmer but I don't want to use the original nomad stuff since my texture is a little different.

Note, what I mean by shimmer is the way the nomad ships seems to change colour and are almost see through sometimes. I found the texture files that it uses but I'm not sure how to put them together. The files can be found in the /ships/nomad/*.mat files.

Well, I always thought the texture was static and the transparency was defined somewhat like cockpit glass, except alpha layered to show thru more at some places than at others. I thought the shimmering was caused by the ships movement.

And God said,
E=mC²
And there was light.

I heard someone discovered something about that and it was defined in the shiparch or something like that. A value that sets it to be semi-transparent.
