Music Compression?

How exactly do I need to compress music so that I can replace existing Freelancer music files? Looking at the existing files, they look like 80kbps / 22,050hz / 16bit / Stereo MP3 files, but it's clearly not as simple as that since their suffix is .wav and creating a file with the same attributes will not be identified by Freelancer (I replaced music_li_space.wav - result: Silence when flying in Liberty systems).

I've switched music on freelancer awhile ago and i had to use some converter utility to make files into wav. files .. and i eventually got some 007 music into mahattan's bar .. if you cant hear music maybe with a replaced file ,you may need to turn up the sound on your speakers..
