Want To Create A New Sector?

Hi Everyone

I'm interested in putting together a team to work on an entire 'Sector Mod' for Freelancer. I have no idea how it would fit into the game alongside the Sirius Sector yet but we can work something out. Anyone interested can contact me at [email protected] or leave a message here. If anyone has created their own system and would like it to be a part of this universe please contact me as well. Any ideas and suggestions are welcome, please post here.

Thanks

Peter

I've been thinking, it *should* be possible to create random systems! So you could have an infinite universe by a series of randomly generated systems. The problem would be you'd never get to the same system twice, and making it so you could land on bases and planets would be hard, but you should be able to make it so it can generate planets and stuff, we already know bases can be created in-game because of the random missions. just an idea.

It is definitely an interesting idea but is not practical for use in multiplayer. How would you meet your friends? I think in the early stages it would be more feasible to make this universe a collection of user-made systems and then improve them and add on more as we went along. I would love to include a feature where server admins could make realistic changes to the universe, ie: close a station for repairs or move battleships. This is probably possible but would need a GUI interface to be popular. Changing commodity prices would be interesting too. I think things like that would increase the interest for the players. Anyone have any other ideas?

The only problem is that ideas like this aren't really a mod, thats more of a sequel. Perhaps I should be talking to Digital Anvil

By the way, does anyone have any ideas for a name for this new sector?

I think you would have to squeeze your sector into the existing one.

Perhaps replacing the existing sector background with a different one and moving the existing systems into one corner. The sector grid is about 13x13 or something like that. Starts are zero 0,0.

The locations of each system is listed in the universe.ini so you can move them easily by editing that file. This would free up lots of room for your stuff. Trust me there is plenty of room too.

Well the idea was to create an entirely new sector. I'm not quite sure about the best way to work this but the best way i can think of at the moment would be to have the user copy their entire DATA folder and then download this MOD. This mod would edit the game changing all existing systems to our new ones and changing the location of the systems on the neural net. That way the user could change between Sirius Sector and this new sector simply by renaming the DATA folder.

Also would you be interested in helping with this project. I've seen your work on ringworld and its brilliant, very detailed.

Game is prepared to use existing systems in SP story, so you must at least preserve half of the systems in the new one. Map size is 16x16, so you have 256 possible locations, of which about 50 are used by the game. Making totally new universe is a very hard job, since some rules are hardcoded in the engine and in dll's. The only thought is to pack existing systems into one corner or even in one point (it works, however looks stupid). You may also make them not visible on the map and force the user jump to the new systems from NY at the very beginning. Some of this ideas were used in Freelancer Massive Addon to not make sector map unreadable.

IMHO, This is not as simple as renaming the DATA folder.
