Mineable Asteroids

Is it possible to use an asteroid model as some sort of wreck?
i'm planning on making a mining mod (with those huge asteroid miners), and before i want to start, i'd like to know if it's possible

you know: the asteroid has several thousands of hitpoints, and every 100 damage orso, it drops a mineral which you can pull in with the tractorbeam.

its an wonderful idea but it will bring chaos 2 the galaxy.
