Textures fixed.. now shots passing through hulls

Hi there
I've made some pretty new ships, and stuck some nice textures on em. They're now working nicely in the game.. except for one thing. On my computer it all works perfectly, however on a friend's the textures half don't work.

What i mean by this is that the textures appear on the ships fine when they have bought them and are flying around. However when i bought one of the ships, he couldn't see the texture on it (the entire body of the ship was invisible, with the hardpoints floating in space).

Not only this, but _I_ can see the textures on his ship fine (we installed the mod from the EXACT same FLMM file). This makes me think that it must be something wrong on his computer.. but i have no idea how to fix it.

I'm pretty sure that my CMP and MAT files are fine, as he (and i) can see the model and textures fine when he's flying the ship.

If anyone has any ideas of WHY the textures work when he flys the ship, but not when he watches me fly it, please say.. also if anyone knows how to fix it.. that would be even better

Have a nice day.

This is usually to do with LOD's (level of detail) settings on the ship as defined in shiparch .ini. The numbers define the various detail levels and how far away ships can be seen from. Normally changing LOD to 0, 1000 or 0, 9999 sort out invisible ship problems.

However as you are installing from the same mod it cant be as simple as that. The only thing i can think of is that your friends detail sliders are set up differently from yours. Therefore the game is looking for a different texture than on your comp and 'cause it cant find one the ship ends up invisible. Try changing the LOD to 0, 1000 in shiparch and seeing if that sorts it out.

No this is about texture sizes. Fell for this my self early on.

All textures must be square. EG 16x16 pixels, 32x32pixels all the way up to 512x512pixels. OTher wise they dont display on some graphics cards. Also Nvidia released a DDs file that creates the mip maps for you automatically which also helps slower systems and reduces the size of your mat files by a fair amount.

LR has the plugin online in its download area.

Okay, thanks guys.

ATM the LOD thingy in the shipArch.ini file is set to:

LODranges = 0, 1500, 1500, 1500

But i'll try changing that to what you suggested.

hehe, i'm quite aware of the square texture problem, as my graphics card seems to be one of those that is affected by it, so all the textures are 256x256, 24 bits/pixel, uncompressed TGA files. (if it matters each ship has just one texture file).

Anyway, thanks again for the help.. i'll try the LOD thingy and give you some feedback.

To be honest, lobs should work the same way on all systems so the fact that it works on yours but not your friends is very odd.

I still don't understand why it didn't work on his computer, but did on mine.. oh well. I did as you suggested, and now it works perfeclty THANK YOU!

Anyway.. another question (as you clever lot are here ). The ships are also messing up with it seeming to be impossible to hit them. Although the ships collide with objects (and each other) quite satisfactorally, once the shields on the ships are smashed, all shots seem to pass straight through, leaving no damage.. except if you're very lucky and hit a hardpoint, in which case that gun/shield/thruster is blown off.

We think it has something to do with setting Collision Groups, but frankly i don't know how to do that.. sorry if this has been answered before, but thanks

You will find missile fire destroyed those ships too.

This just means your ships dont have a working sur file.

Copy one of the devs sur files and rename it so its name matches your models cmp file name exactly but add .sur to the end instead of cmp. Choose a sur file from a mod of roughly equal size for the best results.
