guns that eject spent cartridges: possible?

if any has ever played Starlancer, they willl remember those awesome 'Gattling Plasma cannons' that ejected spent cartridges, i was wondering if this could be incorporated into Freelancer somehow, it would be quite a challenge, but amazing if acheived! it would involve looking into Starlancer files and creating most of the effects ourselves, but first i need to find out whether its possible, anyone want to try?

well i dont know if they can be ejected right when there shot but it might be possible to have some auto-jettison feature. You would have to make the ammo appear as a commodity.

I doubt it would work but you never know. It would have to be a non-homing missle or sumthin with little shot delay.

This isn't a flame. But why would you want to do that anyway? The guns are all energy based weapons so you wouldn't have cartriges.

which is why the guns he's thinkin about would be like slug throwers.

which would be pretty cool.

but think about even these energy weapons. there could be a type of a cartridge that acts like a battery that needs to be ejected in order to insert a new cartridge to fire.

could be worth looking into

If any of you have ever played Earth & Beyond then you will no that there were projectile and beam weapons. The projectiles could be all sorts of dif. weapons too.

There could be a rail gun in Freelancer which could be quite powerful.

Well, Sig Arms is working on a cartidgeless bullet already(think bottle rocket, similar concept)... I don't see why they wouldn't have that in the future.

Yes but I believe the topic starter doesn't care about that, he just wants to play with the effect. Besides, look at Mechwarrior 4, the guns eject cartridges there too!

And the ironic thing wit Mechwarrior 4 is that most of the weapons use caseless ammunition (I'm a long, long time Battletech/Mechwarrior fan). Of course there is a PPC that uses disposable circuitry, and it ejects that circuitry after each shot...

Actually, I was thinking of something along those lines myself. Possibly a custom weapon model that has an associated animation set for use during firing? Just as a suggestion.

do you know how slow bullets would be in space like that?

well maybe not bullets but some projectile. Or each bullet could have a little engine.

How do you do the custom animations? As far as i know, that would require messing with the ale files and i haven't about any breakthroughs in decoding them. Although i might as well wish for a converter that can do custom turrets while i'm about it.

Actually, in theory, a bullet(so long as it didn't use a combustion-based firing agent, hydrogen/oxygen mix, or even h-fuel, would suffice) would carry the same speed as when it left the barrel, and as I am about to reveal...
extracted from http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com/F5B.HTM
"The M14 is a US automatic rifle developed in the 1950s to replace the Garand. It takes a 7.62 mm round from a 20-round box. It has a muzzle velocity of 853 meters-per-second and is sighted to 915m with a cyclic rate of 750 rounds-per-minute."
If the M14, an outdated US rifle, which is already surpassed by four models(the latest being the M4 tactical rifle)... you think the muzzle velocity would be HIGHER than those energy guns. My idea is this... a machine gun. Complete with ammunition. and would go much further. My suggestion for counterbalance is that the shield damage be absolutely minimal(shields were designed to take large rocks flying at you, why shouldn't they stop bullets), but should have above-average damage to the hull. Well above average.
