LOD values?

I need help!! When using the UTF editor to edit the dragon ship file, I find lines that say stuff like ku_elite_lod1030110104503.3db

Does anyone know what the value after lod means? And why if you change it's value the part dissapears when you fly the ship?

I was trying to make a new version of the dragon that was seperate in the game, but I found that any new hardpoints would not appear unless you changed the value, then the hardpoints would appear and the whole part would dissapear (i.e the wing ) Can anybody help me?

it's the name of the vmesh, so don't change it.
it could be something like the version of the mesh, the number of polys or what ever. but it doesn' have anything to do with when which lod is used (that's in the shiparch.ini)
(but this is all afaik)

So then is it possible to have a seperate type of dragon? because it seems the hardpoints wont show up if you use the same vmesh. I tried to make a new type of dragon by copying all the ku_elite files and renaming every thing in them that said Ku_elite to Ku_super, and the ship is in the bases I put it in, with infocards and everything, but doesn't have the hardpoints!! Has anybody tried making a variation of an existing ship?

The civilian very heavy fighter Eagle. I just opened up the existing one, placed more hardpoints and saved it as type 7. After that i placed the correct references in the shiparch and that was that. No problems except for hardpoint locations which were later smoothed out.
