Wing Commander Ships

Hey Guys

Where are all the WC Ships? There's 50-60 totally awesome fighters we could mod, but no ones doing it. How about some WC1 ships? Wouldn't it be neat to spice up some WC1 ships with todays graphics. I allways liked the hornet and the rapier. And the Scimitar was... unique. The Raptor would be a great Heavy Fighter. There's enough 3D models of them out there, seems like it would be easy to mod them. Any Takers on this Idea?

Let Me know if there's any WC Ships you'd like to see. Let's have some feedback.

I agree parabolix, we need Starlancer ships, but I don't know of anyone who's made WC ships, especially WC1. I mean these are the truly great ships, the stuff of legends. Back when everything was hand drawn. Those were the days.

Bob McDob is working on a Privateer mod, and I think HCL's still working on some too.

I was once heretic, just hard to remember when that was.

P.S. If I am 15, than I would have been 2 when Wing Commander came out.
P.P.S. I'm 20.

Lets slap the Longbow out, or the Excalibur (Yes I only have WC3...)

I grew up on the WC games and have a certain bond to some of the great ships that appeared throughout the series. But I ask, do you think in our modern era of modding games, we don't take the time to appreciate and become as familiar with current ships in these modern games the way we didn't have choice but to do with our favs of years gone by?

In other words, when some great game comes out 5 or 10 years from now, will we be saying, "Let's mod in some Freelancer ships!"? Or will we not remember what the original ships were like and only remember our WC or Star Wars mods.

Personally, I'm trying to find a way to have two Freelancers on my system to have it both ways.

BTW I've heard the name Bob McDob somewhere before. I remember liking the way it was hard to say 10 times real fast. I wonder if anybody can jog my memory. I'm pretty new to the forum, but did extensive tutorial reading before posting. But I think I heard the name somewhere else, not specifically to do with Lancers Reactor. It might have been a magazine. Maybe it's just coincidence.

spectre, dude,

We remember WC ships because of the great effort that went into making them, and great effort by the team to make them cool. They were hand drawn! The cockpits were hand drawn! Do you think ten years from now were gonna think back to freelancers wire frame cockpits and mediocre ships and want to mod them? .... Software teams today take to many shortcuts to make games on time. Do you remember when WC3 came out and everyone still had 386's? The hype made most people frantic to upgrade to the 486 so it would work. Do you think if freelancer required a Pentium V people would do the same thing? .... All I can say is those were the days. And this new generation of gamers only cares about graphics. To hell with graphics I say, give me playability and longevity. And give me a rapier. thats all.

I totally agree, playability is more important than graphics. I just finished playing through Privateer 1 on my Pentium 133 because I still enjoy that game. But just adding in ships from other games doesn't make Freelancer a Wing Commander or a Privateer. Though, my favorite space games of all time are WC3 & Privateer 1 & 2 having new mods just won't be the same. I love that cheesy synth music in Privateer!

And don't get me wrong. I will be adding in some ships eventually and I do understand your want to harken to the idea of a full and complete game. Freelancer does feel a little rushed, despite having what 5-6 years to make it.

I guess what I am saying is I need more time to really figure out if I feel Freelancer would be a better game by incorporating older ships. So far I am still satisfied the way it is.

BTW I had a 386 and through tweaking I was able to play all the popular titles of the day at optimum levels. I didn't upgrade until a Pentium 90, then the 133 which I still use to play my old games today. I'm glad I learned that stuff when I did it's where I first dealt with Windows 3.0 ini files. Which allows me to understand modding the ini files for Freelancer fairly well.

If you ask me, and you didn't, Windows 3.1 was the most customizable Windows made where Dos was an ally, not an abandoned OS.

hey spectre,

If you ask me, I think freelancer is a great foundation for a good game. It takes modders to make it awesome though. It's like you said, incomplete. But it's a good spawning ground for ideas. I think WC ships would fit great in it. I wish I had some WC1 ships or even WC2. Remember the crossbow from WC2? That ship was awesome. If you'd like to mod it, I'm sure you'd be a hit, because a lot of people want WC ships, and no ones doing them.

I'd still take Privateer anyday. It's like the box says, "the seemy side of the Wing Commander Universe." This game is too.... clean I guess. Lucas said he created a used universe for Star Wars, thats what we need. The ships in Freelancer are to squeaky clean, and they look like pieces of culutral art rather than fighting ships. WC and SW ships look like they were designed for battle. Agree?

Post Sun Jun 01, 2003 9:51 pm

I totally disagree. Okay, I partually disagree.

I think freelancer has some great ships... and I also love that you can tell who made a ship by it's style. Ships that are unique to each caulture means that you have the whole range..... you can't tell me you think that the bloodhound ship is "too clean". The bloody thing just "screams" junkers. The Britonian ships are like the kilrathi, not in design, buy in the fact they are baced around a natralistic theme (despite the fact fish will never look as good as claws). The patriot and dagger ships look like they could fit into the WC human lineup along with the Arrow.

If you want to make FL more like privater, forget the ships.... we need missons - lots of new missons.

Just my 2c, I could be wrong.

Larryboy has a point. I think we are so accustomed to huge special effects in our modern world of movies and videogames, we just see digitized effects rather than reality. So when a game with as good graphics as Freelancer has in most all cases it feels clean because you know it was all done in a computer. Whereas Privateer and WC seems dirtier because you notice the computer flaws, when in fact the devs were probably disappointed with how splotchy they would look.

I do want it known I support whole-heartedly people who want to add in WC, SW, B5 & Priv ships into the game. I just won't be doing it too much. I prefer enhancing the game elements such as system building and user freedom because by making those things better, no matter what ship you are in the game is made better.

You don't need a Ferrari to enjoy driving to and fro. I don't need a Freij MK II (from Privateer 2 and my favorite of all space craft) to enjoy playing the game.
