Docking: A natural solution.

Hello all.

I think I am going to make big change to how stations work in order to make docking work for all ships in a natural way. EG no using docking rings.

My idea is to use a startrek style docking area and disable all the others then to attack this new docking model to each and every station. This way I believe the docking problem will simply go away. Its an elligent solution to an ugly problem.

If i do this, i'll make the source files available to other modders (outside of Hostile universe) so you dont have to spend hours digging through HU to get the docking sorted.

Another idea i had was ship to ship docking. To make this work I'd have to make some changes to the ships so they can dock with each other. Trouble is, Freelancer works on a Data folder downwards principle. So fpr example all solar objects are refered to in solar or downwards, and the same is true for lots of other stuff. So station stuff would have to be in the ships folder to work and the ships would need base system ini files which the game lists in the universe ini on a per system basis. So its a tricky one.

Gis:

Great idea on ship to ship docking. Any idea how you would deal with the position of the solar object of the ship?

Perhaps all of the ships could be in a new system called "ships" for the position...

No idea yet but I am hoping the fact that ships can be used as bases leaves a door open for ships to be bases yet still be ships. It may mean delibrately naming a base the same as a ship or pasting ship ini code into one the solar inis. Not entire sure yet but I plan on starting work on it soon.

I would have started today but its been sunny outside and ive been dazzling the neightbours with my pure white belly
