Idea- planetary missile launchers!

Okay, ive got a sneaky plan. Basically, you put invisible missile launchers on planets. when enemy ships come near, the planet shoots missiles at them.
Two things:

The launchers cant use ammo- or else the planet would stop shooting
missiles need less tracking- like torpedos
oh, and they cant do normal damage- we cant have one-shot kill missiles

I have no clue how to add mountpoints, so if anyone can give insight, it would be welcome

Hmmmm, reminds me of the Empire assault on Hiigara from Homeworld.
Missles shot from the planet.

You could put something like weapons platforms very near the planet but give them a nonexistent mat and voila, missiles seemingly launched from the planets surface. You'll have to make a new weapons platform for this to prevent glitches with normal weapons platforms.

Also can you use the phantom_physics flag on things other than jumpholes? Otherwise you might crash into one of these invisible platforms. Since the goal is to have the missiles coming from the planet surface... Further, could you conceivably destory one, if you saw where it was shooting from? You would have to make it invincible...

i'm not a modder or anything but maybe u could put the invisible/invincible platforms right inside the planet's atmosphere so even if u want to u wouldn't be able to run into it (that is before blowing up)

Why can't you follow the missiles where they came from and blow up the launchers? Just make them really tough and if you have enough firepower, you could say you took out the launch facilities. More realistic that way to respond to a hostile missile launch with a torpedo.

if you are traveling fast enough with a tough enough ship you can survive an orbital entry and bounce harmlessly of the surface.

DONT TRY THIS AT HOME

ive also seen an eagle try to dock with the rings, the doors opened and it glided through, it then burnt up itn the atmosphere.

The reason I would not want them destroyable is that the average freelancer's ship would not be capable of orbital bombardment. Even the most superior freelancer wouldn't be able to.

Those are the kinds of things that goverments tend to guard very closely. It would be the equivalent of you or I buying an ICBM. Some very serious men in suits would want to have a long discussion about it. It's just wouldn't be allowed.

Just shield it heavily. Only the heaviest of torpedo barrages would be able to punch through the shields.

Actually, anybody would be able to do an orbital bombardment... All they have to do is empty their cargo hold and make sure that what ever it is they drop is falling into the planets gravitational pull... So if they have good bombs with heat shielding then you could bomb the planet from orbit and they wouldn't know it until it was too late if the packages were small enough... (the same also applies to delivery of contraband...)
Or just using a modified version of the technology used to pull in loot to pull a sizable asteroid into the gravity well...

Lasers and other energy bolts would have a pretty harmful effect on planetary installations as well.

Post Tue May 20, 2003 4:18 pm

right anyone can drop heat-shielded stuff onto a planet. The technology to aim and guide those weapons is going to be controlled. Also, the technology to lock onto ground targets with beam weapons is going to be heavily controlled. While they may do damage if they hit, the refractory and disruptive effects of atmosphere are going to make it very diffifulty to hit a target from orbit with a laser intended for space use.

A laser for vacuum use will be designed for certain properties in that vacuum. Change the enviornment and efficiency and acuracy will drop very rapidly.

If such a thing was allowed, it would have to be made an extremely hostile action.
