Jumphole/Jumpgates

Is there a theoretical/real limit to the number of workable jumpholes/jumpgates in the game?

Is it possible to place new jumpgates and have them work ingame, as opposed to just jumpholes?

How do you go about editing best path routes used by the game to take advantage of the new nodes/gates ?
