Freelancer Dev/Play PC Building

Hey all,
I betatested Freelancer, and fell in love with it. Unfortunately, the PC that I was playing it on was borrowed from my work, and I had to give it back shortly after release. Alas, I find myself longing for the joys of flying through a breathtakingly beautiful universe. So, I think I wanna buy a *very* cheap PC, just enough to play FL reasonably well, and work on mods for it. I'm thinking something like a 1GHz level desktop. Cheapness is the defining issue here. Anyone wanna suggest how to go about doing this? My goal is $200, though at least under $300 would be acceptable. Here are few examples of what I've seen so far:

Couple look possible from... http://www.maincomp.com/shop/showcase.jsp
A few from here maybe... http://www.iosales.com/isapi/EVisions.i ... dByLine(21)&EvApp=sf.3014
Or possibly here... http://www.pcusa.com/shopdisplayproduct ... t=Systems+

Anyway, any suggestions/help?

Thanks,
~Åstro

basically ur search engin for cheapest parts on the internet

otherwise consider urself screwed

just remember never buy a vid card under 100 or u wont be able to play it
also remember that cheap parts = lower quality

$200? Excuse me while I ROFLMAO

You won't get anything good for that price. You'll be spending at least around $600-$900

I got a P4 2.6GHZ for only $810, with 256 DDR RAM, and a GForce4 MX600 (free)

Excuse me? I thought I made this pretty clear, that I did NOT want a high-end system. No P4-2.7Ghz box, plz. I'm thinking like old 1GHz, etc.

I'm not sure I understand the laughter.
For $500 CND I built myself an Athlon XP 2000+ with 512 MB of RAM (sans monitor, video, and sound card).
That was 8 months ago, when the Canadian dollar was all of 64 cents US (making it all of $320 USD).

Therefore, a 1000 MHz system should be as costly as a pile of dirt at this point in time.

The real key is to spend a little bit on a halfway decent video card, and buy a used system between 700 and 1000 MHz. If you actually have a computer (I'm assuming you do, due to the post, but I've been wrong before), then you should be able to get the processor and mobo rather cheaply (plus, you save on a costly monitor). The video card and RAM are the keys, though, as my parents computer, with its GeForce 2 MMX and its 128 MB PC-133 simply can't handle the game.

If you shop around, you'll find exactly what you need right around the price you're looking at ($250ish).

The hardest part will be to actually find a processor that's below a certain speed, as the mainstream option at the moment is to mount the biggest, fastest, hottest, overhyped processor you can find.

But I have a Duron 1.3Ghz, and you could run an Aircraft Carrier from it. Freelancer? No problem. GeForce II MMX/400, 512MB. No lag in sight.

Try eBay as well. You can more often than not find good deals there.

Reading some of these posts makes me laugh so hard its some of the best
entertainment money can buy, but this is really sad. When I read the line
"Alas, I find myself longing for the joys of flying through a breathtakingly beautiful universe" and the rest of it, well lets just say that this person deserves a break because not all of us are so fortunate Astro_tSD if you or maby a friend do not know how to put together a computer I will do it for you, all you need to do is get the parts and of coarse the operating system, cant forget that ,together. I have and extra video card just begging to feel those pixils running through its veins again its a GeForce4 but it will do the trick. There might even be some others that have spare parts laying around who knows if enough people read this you might just be in luck

Happy Hunting

Ut, Astro didn't say he wanted to BUILD computer. I was laughing at the thought that he wanted to buy a computer with the specs to make freelancer "breathtakingly beautiful" for only $200 - $300

Yeah, I guess I could clarify that. Yes, I'm totally open to building it myself from parts. I can do that.

Well, if anyone was interested, I ended up getting alot more than I expected, for alot less. Here's what I ended up getting... P4 2.2GHz, no HD (I've got several), no CD (ditto), 256mb DDR RAM, integrated video, case, power supply, etc. Basically the motherboard in a case with a powersupply with a CPU on it, and some RAM. I've got everything else I'd need already, except for the graphics card. (Keith...? E-mail or IM me!) And the price for all this... $120 (plus shipping). Not too bad, I don't think. Could be better, but it seems good to me. Now I just gotta get a graphics card, and maybe a bit more RAM...

Thanks,
~Åstro

You can get a Radeon 7500 for about $40 brand new, or check out Ebay for a used 3D card.
