Maximum Texture Resolution

Is there a maximum resolution I can use for a ship skin? Right now I've got a 2500x2500 pixel template, but I'm pretty darn sure I should shrink it down because of filesize issues... so.. what resolution should I do?

I don't know if´there is a hardcoded limit in Freelancer, but DA themselves never used a texture bigger than 512x512 as it seems.

T448 ... out.

Hrmmm.... 512 seems AWFULLY small to me... I guess I'll just make one hi-res and shrink it if I have to...

Texture sizes dramatically increase the size of a mod and the memory required to run it. Consider this. Suppose every ship used 1024x1024 textures on all ships. What would be the new min requirements for the game ?

If we where talking 1 object, it probably wouldnt matter but as FL has a lot of ships, all passing by at the same time it can mount up. So the trick is to get a ballance between detail and the need to conserve resources so battles are smooth as a silk and fun.

Lets face it, when the games cashing to disk due to large textures eating into what memory you have and your battle is proceeding at 2 frames per second, its definately not fun.
