Read this before posting you Mod idea / request

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

Read this before posting you Mod idea / request

In my opinion:

Please don't post a mod idea / mod request unless you are willing to work on it yourself. If you really want to:
1: Look to see if it has been requested before. It probably has.
2: Make it clear it is a request, and be polite.
3: Things like changing ship availability, changing prices, cloaking, new equipment, new missions, etc. have been discussed extensively. If you don't want to do the work , just wait. If you do, find those threads and jump in.
4: If you have a favorite ship and you want to see it modding in, go for it. There's lots of discussion on how to do this.

If your excuse is that you are not a modder, too bad. I am pretty sure that none of the major modders in this forum took a class in Freelancer Mods 101. Just grab the simple programs, back up your files and take a look. Some of it will make sense and some won't. Search the forums, and more will make sense. In ten minutes you can succesfully mods something, and then you are a modder, albeit an inexperienced one.

Thanks.

Mods:
Please, edit or delete this as you feel. Would it be possible to make people read the rules when they sign up? Or a similar post telling them what has been discussed?

So, because I'm not interested in modding, and I am not a modder, I cannot throw out ambitious ideas to those out there who are or possibly motive someone into a new direction? Please explain this because there is no Modding Idea Forum on here yet. What is the despicable crime (from what you sound like it is) in posting a mod idea to this forum? I really would like to understand the logic to this.

If you are a modder, it's probably because you already have some idea of your own, or your mod team. It gets really annoying when some n00b decides he needs his Klingon Bird of Prey (just an example) and starts complaining that nobody's helping him, even when he knows nothing about doing it himself. Such things generally turn into flames, and aren't good for anyone involved.

There are only 10 kinds of people in the world:
those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Maybe this site needs a Mod Wish List section so us noobs can express ourselves without interrupting joblo genius modder out there.

A mod wish list is a good and bad idea, but my point is that NONE of us were Freelancer Modders before the game came out, unless there is a developer stalking around. Some of these people seem talented enough that I wouldn't be surprised.

The reason a wish list is a bad idea is that most modders are working on a project of their own. They are willing to help you, but that's it. I don't think a wish list would get looked at. I know I would ignore it almost all of the time, because I'm working on specific projects for MY mod.

ceylon,

I know you think you speak for all the modders out there, but I doubt it. Just because you are working on your own project and wouldn't look at other people's ideas doesn't mean other people are that narrowly focused. Even the FLSDK site has a mod wish list, so I think they greatly value other people's ideas. Im not saying that your focus is wrong for you, but I personally have read a lot of great ideas, particularly on ideas for missions that I think even if I cannot mod right now I will incorporate into my own custom missions when I do get a quality mission builder. I know that I have enough trouble counting in binary let alone working in a foreign scripting language, but I think I could put some good use to a different kind of easier- to-use creation tool, and I want to make it the best I can. To be the best a project can be, I think, includes other people's ideas.

Hmm, if you read my post, I think you would see that I said exactly that. "I personally wouldn't look at it." That's because I get tired of seeing a bunch of silly requests for the same things. My point is, if a mod request forum exists, people may post them in that appropriate place. As it is now, people come in here without having read a single post in the tutorials section, and post their ideas that:
1. Have already been done. OR
2. Can't be done with current tools. OR
3. Are of no interest to anyone but themselves. OR
4. Are already explained in detail in a tutorial, they just haven't read.

Someone like yourself, who is interested in other people's suggestions for a mod, may look in that forum, where you will be assured of finding them. Someone like myself who is actually looking for new discoveries about the code, from people actually doing mods, so that I may increase my knowledge, would not. Once I get my mod finished, I would likely go into said requests forum and say:

"Hmm, I've got my mod finished, and hey look... Person A wants something like that. I'll post and let them know they should check it out."

Or

"Hey, I've basically done this, I'll make a change and let this person know."

But the vast majority of requests seem to be ship imports (and requests for your own personal base). It isn't hard to import a ship, so why not just take the time to learn yourself. As for the base, if we knew how to do it, it would already be done. If you want it, you better jump in and help us figure it out.

I also get ideas from others, but I try to post technical questions, the answers to which will help me and other modders to continue their work.

Mods: Enough of this. I won't put another post in here unless there is something to be said. It is going to degenerate into a nasty thread if it goes much further.
