looking through the freelancer installation files i came across the \DATA\EQUIPMENT\MODELS\HARDWARE directory. And the filenames really impressed me:

br_fission_generator.3db
br_protective_armor.3db
br_stealth_armor.3db
br_xenon_ion_drive.3db
co_compact_toroidal_nuclear_drive.3db
co_stealth1.3db
co_stealth2.3db

...

there are 38 such files, 2.25 MB's worth. Now does anybody have ANY idea what these contain? Is this a gold mine or loose ends?

If you look carefully, you'll find more of such odd files throughout the Freelancer install dir.... like the rh_micro_nuke_torpedo.3db ... there are many files that seemingly serve no purpose.

Imho the developers originally wanted to create a game more like elite.
Means engines purchaseable, same for armor etc. otherwise the settings in the ini's make no sense. But they skipped the idea (dunno why) yet the files and the ini entries are still there...should be no problem to implement purchaseable engines/power etc into the game....

Microsoft has been pushing for a release, I guess. That's too bad, because the game could have been much more if you could customize and tweak your ship in every way you can...

Maybe they shoved all that in for an expansion. That way they would not have much work to do on the expansion.(everything prefinished)
