you mean pirate it? i don't think we should talk about that here lol

lol... my advice would be to find a freeware/non-crippled shareware alternative to 3D Studio. The only way someone can post a link of 3D Studio other than the trial version is to send you a link to a Warez site or something... ie., illegal software piracy.

Check out some of the alternatives. I'm a fan of freeware stuff just becuase some of those developers are very good at what they do, although their programs may not always have the incredible tech support or documentation, or all the bells and whistles of other big-company products. Then again, some of them are very widely supported in all ways!

Check out a search engine like Google.com and do a search for:

freeware + "3d modeling"

or check out download.com or something similar. Hope that helps!

He's probably right, you should look for a freeware alternative. If you're having trouble finding something you like, e-mail me at [email protected] or hit me up on AIM (Daekar3) and I'll see what I can do.

GMax, is by the same company as 3ds max, and is free, altough now discontinued i believe. u should still be able to download it from their site tho, try www.discreet.com

but you won't be able to import anything you've done with gmax.. it uses a different file format than 3dsmax, and you can't export to 3ds, only to file-formats of games where the developers wrote an export-plug-in. and allthough there is an SDK with wich you can programm aditional plug-ins, you have to pay for it...

Get Maya 4 Personal Learning Edition. It's completely full-featured and lets you save as often as you want, but it only lets you render at 1024x768 and watermarks each rendering. Other than that, it's a complete package, and great for learning modelling and/or animation.

Maya wouldn't be very good for Freelancer. It's not used a lot in games anyway. Mainly just movies.

You can get milkshape, it's pretty cheap and it's what the plugin is for anyway. 3dsmax will cost you around 1500-3000 dollars. So, unless you're rick I'd suggest a different program.

i use DoGa L2 for ship creation then fine tune in 3ds max then export to milkshape then export to cmp
not that i know what to do from here, but i have nearly a dozen ships freshly esported with the milkshape cmp exporter i got from the forums here.
anybody know what to do next? i think hardpoints but i don't know how.

There is a shareware program that you can download, it is a crappy modding tool, but supposivly it converts gmax files to 3ds files!

You can get a student version of 3dsmax for a fraction of the price of the comercial version. I picked up a copy of 3dsmax R3 for ~$250AU a couple of years ago. it even came with a free copy of character studios. the only limitations i've noticed with the student version is u get a stupid screen pop up whenever u load it up saying that its a student version and u cant make money off anything you do with it. and the best thing about it is you get a cool dongle to plug into your com port

Get GMAX, it is a stripped down version of 3DS and is used with Dungeon Siege, it should be freely downloadable and came on a CD with CGW magazine, all you have to do is have web access to register it.

I am pretty sure that you can't render your stuff in Gmax. I may be wrong about that, but if you don't care about rendering then Gmax is your best bet
