parent and child impulse

parent impulse = 20

child impulse = 80

normally these are on rockets and torpedoes, i think i have seen it in shiparch.ini also, any idea what they do?

Well since they are on ship subsections in the shiparch.ini, like this:

[CollisionGroup
obj=port fin_lod1
separable=
parent_impulse=240
child_impulse=7
dmg_hp=DpPortfin
dmg_obj=li_fighter_dmg_portfin_cap
mass=5
debris_type=debris_small_ship
separation_explosion=explosion_small_ship_breakoff
type=Port_Fin
hit_pts=163
root_health_proxy=true

I'm guessing the parent/child impulses are the amount of force put into the separation of the two parts.

Hi

I know these terms from the 3d animation. I try to explain it (with my school english ) ... lets say, you have a main object inside a space ... if you add a "child" object to it, it will follow the "parent". The clue is ... the child has its own space.
Its like ... eeehhmm ... ok, lets say you are traveling with a submarine ... the ocean is the unviverse ... an you are inside the submarine moving there . So you are a "child" to the "parent" submarine . You moving with it and you have your own "universe" moving in it too!
Another good example is our solar system ... the sun is the parent object ... the planets are moving around the sun as child objects (because they are linked to the sun) ... the moon of the earth is the child object from the earth (which is the child of the sun).

I hope you understand what i like to say ... Greetings & good hunting ... MOS
