System Map

I have determined that the Main System Map is a grid from 0,0 to 15,15 and the system are positioned accordingly.

Can anyone tell me what the grid axis lengths are for a single System Map. I read that the sun is placed at 0,0. Is this true?

What are the outer lengths? Also is it three dimensional so x,y,z or is everything on the same z axis, so just x,y?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Flying through freelancer, it becomes very evident that everything is on the same Z axis which is really un-realistic. I hope that new system makers decide to utilize the Z axis.

Any idea on the system map co-ords?

I would like to know so that I can plan the systems on a grid.

Anybody?

Each "grid" represents roughly 25 units if I remember correctly. Decompress a couple systems and label a few landmarks and compare them to get a good idea.

Not realistic?

In a solar system, most everything is arranged on a plane, because debris will form a disc around the star (something to do with the star's spin and magnetic fields, methinks). The only things in the system which would be above or below the plane would be extra-solar objects, which don't exactly hang around for long (e.g. comets.) It's rediculously unlikely that a star will pick up a planet that didn't form from the same dust that formed the star.

The best places to build off-world stations are at lagrange points, which fall on a plane with the two bodies they are based off of. These points are stable/mostly stable places where the gravitational pull from two bodies cancel each other out. There are five:

We have a satellite in orbit around L1 to study solar wind. L2 is always dark. Bizarro Superman comes from L3. L4 and L5 are the most stable, but are rather far away.

If you want realism, the planets should be moved farther away from each other, and from their solar centre. Much farther.

I believe that a system map is 170,000 wide and 170,000 high (-85,000 to 85,000) on X and Y axis...

By the way you can place the sun wherever you want...

In my own Sol Syatem I'm making I placed the sun in a corner to have more space for everything... Just making a quarter system, with only the inner 4 planets..

As for all objects being placed in the same z position, if you look around in our real solar system, you would see that only the planet Pluto is rotating in a different plane than the rest... And many people doubt that Pluto can be called a planet...
