im on a crappy 56k dial up and even with IE6 (which obviously is the slowest browser) it takes just about 15 seconds

i all depends on what kind of video, if you check the latest asgard post i made a php video player which shows all the vids made by asgard folk that are posted on youtube, if all vieos were played through flash people could click play and have the video load when they click play

Yes, it does depend on the video and how it is posted. And good job on the method you used. I apolgise, but I have not seen yet as I do skip the main page because of the load time.

However, because of some of the videos, I skip the main page. The point is, the main page should be the fastest of any pages on any given site as this is the main prtal to your community.

I don't know how many sites I have avoided visiting due to accessive page load times. No skin off my back, but I sure bet those sites would have loved to have me there as it would have been potential business or community growth.

5 seconds on a boradband connection for the main page to load IMO is way to long.

5 seconds on broadband?
Loads in less than 2 seconds for me, as proof in this screenshot.

Funny, mine says the exact same number but it takes longer for the main page to finally open for me.

Post Thu Apr 12, 2007 5:27 am

pstt ... thats just the time the page does need to build the side from the database
images are loaded afterwards

Page Load Time: 0:156

about 6 seconds overall

That's not too long to wait for all that great stuff

Post Thu Apr 12, 2007 11:51 am

What about showing only the very 5 newest news and not like 100231407239 that make my internet load the page in 10+ seconds?

oh and btw.. if Im looking for some really big content I think its okay to have a huge page, but news, comeon. And its the entry page! Its really *not good* to wait for a page for more than a few seconds if you visit it for the first time.

Maybe a archive-page with like 50 news would be cool as well (when downgrading the main page).

Maybe you haven't noticed but there is a News Archive page already.
All the news articles that have been posted in the past are in the archive.

And there is a Customize page that is suppose to let you set the news posts from 5 to 25 but it hasn't worked for a long time.

I personally don't know how to fix it. I really don't know much about websites, never did, but I did learn enough HTML to post news articles and downloads.
I don't have a lot of free time because I work a lot of hours and have a home that requires a lot of work to keep it up and a wife that I don't neglect.

I have asked for help in the past and Louva-Deus helps out when he can but he's in college and won't have time to help out until school is out for the summer.

We were lucky to have SWAT_OP-R8R volunteer his time to add the content that he did and mess around somewhat with what is already here but he has other obligations also.

I for one would like to keep Lancers Reactor up and running as a community hub because we're lucky enough to have Akataka running the hardware in the background.

I welcome the communities ideas, thoughts and feedback.

There are some things we can do and there are some things we cannot do.
I wont go into detail about that but I will listen to your ideas and feedback.

I do ask one thing though, if I ask a question that it not go unanswered...

Well I thought the massive amount of news on the front page was intention..

If its just not working right, its another matter. But anyways, why did you guys not yet ask for help from the community? (maybe you did and I didnt notice).
Anyways, would be cool if those setting would work and if the standard setting would be 5 news only.

As I said before I did ask for help. If you read what I said I don't know about Active Server Pages and never had time to learn all there is about this complicated website.

I'm open to suggestions. There are things we can and cannot do but I won't go into detail here. Email, Teamspeak or MSN would be a way to have a discussion for those that are serious about keeping this community and website active.

You can find my Email address and MSN contact information on the staff page.

hmm, maybe if all videos were uploaded to youtube the youtube player could be used, it would make videos load alot faster, also there are a few asp based video scrits, like clones of youtube that could be used

Ah bulldog, you mean the service that Youtube provides to uploaded videos, where it provides the HTML to embed the movie on the page. It isn't actually cached into the browser unless they click on play, at which point it starts to stream it - otherwise, it just has a sort of player placeholder?

www.youtube.com - check any video, and it should have a little option next to rate etc which will allow you to get the html for an embed i think it was.

Good idea!
