BSG Beyond the Red Line

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

BSG Beyond the Red Line

Has anyone else played this game yet? I know the demo has been out for a few months now, and I must say I'm very impressed. For being an Freespace 2 mod (a game that is quite ancient by now), especially. However, I'm unable to find any info about the status of a full version...

For that matter, when is the next (last?) season of BSG on TV starting? Surely the folks at Sci-Fi channel have cut all the corners off of enough paper to begin broadcasting by now...

Nov 24th, JD, so get that BSG thread warmed up, we'll be launching Vipers right after the first episode (but wait 24hrs for me to get it) and here's a sneak trailer
and some more

you do know that S4 will be the last? RDM says that he has no intention for it to drag on and wants to wrap the whole story up in this season. if they decide to continue the story in some way afterwards it will be in the form of specials, not another series. It's a shame in some ways but if you look at the Star Trek franchise, which RDM worked on for a long time, you can see that every ST series dragged on too long with substandard episodes because Paramount knew that ST fans would watch it no matter how bad it was (I know, 'cos I did) but in the end it was the networks that cancelled ST:Enterprise. There does seem to be a natural life span to a sci-fi series and the drama, even when it's good, can't last forever. So fair play to RDM, he wants to go out on a high and for the story to maintain it's integrity and not be padded out by unnecessary episodes and seasons.

as for BSG:BTRL, I've been playing it since the demo was released and i think it's wonderful - everything I wanted a BSG game to be. Sadly I've been hammering it that much I destroyed my Sidewinder! (it was nearly 7 years old though, I bought it for StarLancer) haven't got round to buying a new joystick yet.

This will indeed be an exciting season. I'm looking forward to the season kickoff movie/ episode with the history of the Pegasus, and seeing how that massive battle with the ghosted Starbuck will work out.

As for BTRL, I don't know if you are aware, Taw, but there are several add on missions available at their website. There are some that even include capships, and while they aren't actually battlestars, they give a sense of what its like to fly through all that flak shown in the TV series.

I still haven't been able to equip/use missiles in game. Is this possible for the demo?

owing to the current lack of a joystick, I haven't done any more BTRL, and haven't checked the site out for a while, so no I wasn't aware, but I am now thx!

I don't recall being able to use missiles at all. But then in BSG how many times have you seen a missile being fired from a Viper? Once in Season 1, that's the only time I can recall, although Apollo fired a special missile at the Resurrection Ship's FTL and HotDog fired two air-to-grounds in Exodus Part 2.

Much more challenging to fly a spoace-sim with no shield technology, limited ammo and fuel, and really fragile ships that break if they hit things. Am I just rubbish or are Cylon Raiders really that hard to hit? Somehow on Galactica I think I'd be ground crew.

don't be silly, effs, they don't have redshirts in BSG - although those Marines fill the same function. I'd be one of those scruffy oiks who tighten up rivets on the Vipers and top up the oil.

The Raiders are VERY hard to hit... and it especially makes all of those 'protect the poor helpless cargo ship" missions extremely difficult, even with a joystick. The game's 'technical information' page or somesuch, under weapons, lists a variety of missiles (and the Cylons shoot them at you, don't they?), but the options to choose a ship/ loudout seem to be disabled.

Apparently multiplay is quite good for that game, though I haven't given it a go yet.

Ahh, too bad there isn't a BSG mod for Starlancer. The fighters already launch from tubes anyways.

akshuly I went over Starbuck and Kat's training advice in "Skar" whcih generally keeps me alive and gets me kills. Turn into any attack (providing you have the fuel and ammo) and don't shoot till they fill your windscreen. It's way harder and more realistic than almost any other space combat sim I can think of.

Somehow I always end up in 'turning' dogfights... but I have found that in the asteroid/escort mission that if you skim the surface pretty close the Raiders will crash into the asteroids and give you a bit of a leg up.

Post Mon Oct 15, 2007 2:17 pm

that's cos they're stupid frakkin' toasters, JD. A human can always outhink a toaster, except maybe the skinjobs.

(wait - it's not actually real, is it? seems real enough though when I'm in a dogfight with some Raiders!)

ironic that the BTRL guys chose an asteroid plinking missions for the demo, when back in FS2 it was the asteroid missions that I hated the most!

I can't much stand any of the "escort poor helpless soul that won't even try to dodge asteroids" missions... especially in SL with all the torpedo spam going on. Those were nightmares. Hopefully the full version of this game will make it out soon.
